The Titan, Atlas, was condemned to spend all eternity as a living pillar.

This was his punishment for mutiny against the gods of Greece.

With massive arms he held back the curtains of the heavens, so that the earth would not be crushed if it falls.  His name fitted this task : Atlas means "enduring"
